yeah, you read that right. i'm blogging about soda.
oh, but not just any soda, as my fellow southern Sundrop addicts can attest. here's what wikipedia has to say:
"Sundrop is a citrus-flavored Soft drink/soda produced by Cadbury-Schweppes. Like other citrus sodas, it has a yellowish-green color imparted by lots of Yellow 5 and Yellow 6. It has a sharper taste than Pepsi's Mountain Dew or Coca-Cola's Mello Yello, and is known for its high caffeine and sugar (63mg per 12oz can) content. It is often referred to as "Golden Goodness" or "the Golden Shower" or "Nature's Candy".
While extraordinarily popular in the Carolinas, the Jackson Purchase area of western Kentucky and the Tennessee Valley (sales of the drink have been known to beat cola sales 5:1 in some areas), and also in the Rolla, Missouri, area, SunDrop remains relatively unknown in most of the United States. It has, however, been found sold very occasionally as far north as Front Royal, Virginia. This leads to its devoted followers to pay upwards of $18 for shipment of a six-pack outside of the region."
i can't say i've ever heard it referred to as the "Golden Shower". that's pretty creepy. but they're right about the devoted following. you'll notice i don't capitalize names, places or the beginnings of sentences, but i'll capitalize the name Sundrop.
i was first introduced to it's "golden goodness" by my dear friend mikl, who once told me his father did Sundrop shots to wake up in the mornings. the name soon became synonymous with late-night bouts of caffeine-induced silliness. in college, i occasionally used 6-packs of Sundrop to help me pull all-nighters before exams. in social situations (namely our trips to franklin, nc), it's my equivalent to alcohol. don't need no booze, just gimme that yellow number 5...
and now by a miracle i have some in my fridge, which means i'll be hopped up on sugar for about a week until we run out. *sigh* if anybody from nc wants to come visit, just bring Sundrop in exchange for free room & board.
did i mention it's great with chili?
