they're coming to get you, barbara

this week's movie recommendation:  Land of the Dead
a friend of mine has been schooling me on the subject of classic horror flicks, most recently the zombie movie genre.  when i mentioned that i saw a trailer for LotD, he said i had to see the three prequels first.  i hadn't seen Night of the Living Dead since i was in high school so we started at the beginning and, over the past couple of weeks, i've seen the entire George Romero set.  it really screws with you after awhile.  when i was driving home from work the other day, there was this tall guy by the metro station with stringy gray hair and a blank expression and my first thought was ACK, a ZOMBIE!
anyway, the movie was really great.  lots of guts, gore and post-apocalyptic zaniness.  watching zombie movies on the small screen is cool, but you don't get that same jolt that you get in the theater when the zombie comes out of nowhere and the whole audience jumps...i love that.

my love of gore is a revolt against my ridiculously timid childhood.  i was scared to death of everything.  i couldn't even watch Goonies as a kid because i was scared of skeletons.  i would run out of the room whenever there was a scary part in a movie and it wasn't until years later that i realized i was imagining the scary bits to be much scarier than they were.  now, with each viewing of Texas Chainsaw Massacre or House of 1,000 Corpses, i feel like i'm making up for lost time.

when my brother & i were little, we had a babysitter who let us stay up too late one night and we watched some movie on tv that freaked us out.  so the next time we had a sitter, my parents told her that we could stay up and watch the Muppet Show, but then we had to go to bed.  apparently, there was some skit on the Muppet Show about a giant, man-eating chicken and it gave us both nightmares.

my mom loves to tell that story.
btw, if anyone knows what episode that might have been, please let me know.  i would love to see this man-eating chicken as an adult.
